Real Sunrise Public School, Ghaziabad

Designing for Young Minds Real Sunrise Public School's management approached Crosby with a clear vision: transform their newly constructed academic wing into a contemporary learning environment that would differentiate them in Ghaziabad's competitive private school market. The project encompassed 10 classrooms, a library, science lab, computer lab, and shared spaces serving 300 students from kindergarten through grade 8.

The brief emphasized bright, engaging spaces that stimulate learning rather than the institutional beige that characterizes many Indian schools. The management wanted an environment that parents would immediately recognize as premium—justifying the school's higher fees—while remaining practically durable for daily student use.

Design Strategy: Color & Light We developed a vibrant palette breaking away from traditional neutral school interiors. Each grade level received designated colors creating wayfinding while adding visual excitement: kindergarten (warm yellows), primary grades (playful teals and oranges), middle school (sophisticated navy and coral). The color strategy wasn't random decoration but psychological tool: warm colors in younger grades create welcoming comfort, while cooler sophisticated tones in older grades signal maturity matching student development stages. Natural light maximization was critical—the new building's large windows provided advantage we amplified through light-colored walls reflecting daylight deep into spaces, minimal window treatments preserving light while controlling glare, and strategic mirror placement in interior zones bouncing light throughout.

Classrooms: Flexible Learning Spaces Each 450-square-foot classroom accommodates 30 students with flexibility for different teaching modes: traditional lecture, group work, individual study. We specified modular furniture systems allowing quick reconfiguration rather than fixed desks limiting teaching approaches.

Bright Primary Classroom

Student desks are lightweight yet stable, with ergonomic sizing appropriate for age groups. Primary grades have adjustable-height desks accommodating children's growth. All furniture includes rounded edges and non-toxic finishes essential for child safety.

Each classroom includes: interactive whiteboard (replacing traditional chalkboards), teacher workstation with storage, organized supply cabinets, bulletin boards for student work display, and reading corner with floor cushions in younger grades. The color accent walls—one per classroom in grade-level color—create visual focus while keeping costs reasonable (single accent wall versus full-room painting).

Library: Knowledge Hub The 1,500-square-foot library serves as academic heart. We designed it as inviting space encouraging reading rather than institutional book storage. Shelving employs colorful modern units at child-appropriate heights. Low shelves (kindergarten-grade 2) progress to taller units (grades 6-8) creating visual graduation matching student growth.

Science Lab: Hands-On Discovery The 800-square-foot science lab balances safety with engagement. Laboratory-grade materials meet safety codes while colorful accents maintain the school's vibrant aesthetic.

Computer Lab: Digital Fluency The 700-square-foot computer lab houses 30 workstations with infrastructure for regular technology updates as equipment evolves. Custom computer desks include cable management, power outlets, and ergonomic keyboard trays. We specified adjustable chairs essential as students range from small kindergarteners to adolescent 8th graders. Future-proofing includes extra conduit for technology expansion, robust WiFi infrastructure, and flexible power distribution allowing equipment reconfiguration without electrical work.

Common Areas: Social Learning Corridors and common spaces received equal design attention—these aren't leftover spaces but opportunities for informal learning and social development. Wide corridors (2.5 meters) accommodate student movement between periods without congestion. We incorporated display walls showcasing student artwork and achievements—celebrating student work reinforces engagement. Colorful wayfinding graphics help younger students navigate independently, building confidence and reducing teacher burden. Breakout zones with bench seating and small tables create informal gathering spots—recognizing that valuable learning happens in unstructured peer interactions.

Materials: Durability Meets Design Material selection balanced aesthetic ambition with practical reality: 300 students daily for years require serious durability. Flooring: Vinyl tiles (not luxury vinyl but durable commercial grade) in light grey withstanding heavy traffic while showing less dirt than white or dark alternatives. Walls: High-quality paint with eggshell finish (easier cleaning than matte, less reflective than semi-gloss) in wipeable formulations withstanding regular cleaning. Furniture: Powder-coated steel frames (more durable than wood for student furniture) with laminate tops in colorful finishes.

Whiteboards: Porcelain-on-steel (not cheaper melamine) ensuring ghost-free writing even after years of use. Lighting: LED throughout for energy efficiency and long life (reduced maintenance in high ceilings). Every spec considered long-term cost of ownership, not just initial price—important for budget-conscious educational institutions.
